After Earth is rendered inhospitable, a Human colony has been established on Mars. While the colony has been running smoothly, the resources brought from Earth are starting to run low.

You are the pilot of the only surviving cargo ship - the small Shippy McShippington. It is your job to retrieve resources from Earth to sustain the colony's growth.

Beyond simply surviving, the people of Mars live in melancholy...perhaps making the colony feel more like home could solve this?

===Submission for SA Game Jam 2023===

Hey there! This is our 72-hour submission for the SA Game Jam 2023! The theme for this jam was "To Make A Place Your Home", and so our submission uses the setting of a Mars colony to explore the idea of simply surviving vs going over and above to truly make a place your own, and the balance between the two. While the game can be finished by simply staying alive, the intended way to play is to sacrifice the safety net of survival to instead try to make Mars feel more like home.

All art and audio was created by us specifically for this project.

The game is playable in the browser, but downloads are also available at the bottom of the page!

Thanks for checking out our little game, we hope you have fun playing it!

Make Mars Home is a short colony survival game with a twist - while simply making sure the colony has enough resources to survive is enough to avoid a game over, the intended way to play is to make the colony feel like home and make sure the colonists are happy in their new home.

There are 3 different endings to get, depending on how well you succeed!

Gameplay:

MMH is a turn-based game, where each turn represents a single trip to and from Earth to fetch an item. Each turn, you must choose an item or building from the 5 available choices on the left and deliver it to your colony. You can only deliver 1 item per turn, so choose wisely!

Your colony has five stats that you need to manage:

  • Population
  • Supplies
  • Defence
  • Terraforming
  • Homeliness

Each item and building increases one of these stats. Items are single use and provide a once-off increase, while buildings are permanent and provide stats each turn.

Population represents how many colonists live in your colony. If your population reaches 0, you lose!

Supplies are what your colony needs to survive from day to day. Your colony will constantly use up supplies proportional to your Population. Your Population will also slowly increase when you have lots of Supplies (200+), but will decrease when you run out of Supplies. Make sure you have enough Supplies to support your colonists!

Defence represents your colony's ability to defend itself. It turns out there is life on Mars...and it's not friendly. Every few turns, your colony will be attacked by aliens. You can see when the next attack will happen, so you have time to prepare. Each attack will have a certain strength; this is how many colonists will die if you don't have enough Defence. Each point of Defence you have will cancel out one point of attack strength, and prevent one colonist from dying. Defence is used up by attacks, so make sure to have a constant supply of Defence!

Homeliness represents how much the colony feels like home. Get to a value of 1500 within 100 turns to truly make Mars feel like home!

Terraforming is a multiplier for all Homeliness gained from both items and buildings. It starts at -50%, halving all Homeliness gained, and goes up to +100%, doubling all Homeliness gained. Terraforming is important for speeding up your progress towards getting enough Homeliness!
